Services

M. Tamar Berg is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist currently practicing in Sonoma County, CA.

Offering:
Individual, Couples, & Family Therapy

Specializing in: Play Therapy for children & Psychodrama for Trauma Survivors

Tamar’s theoretical orientation is client oriented and experiential. She favors Psychodrama and Gestalt techniques but is eclectic considering the client’s needs and goals. Although therapy has been called “the talking cure”, not all people learn best through verbal or auditory means. Creative arts such as Psychodrama induce therapeutic processes that aid trauma survivors in ways that are different from verbal therapy. Psychodrama integrates elements of intuition, spontaneity and imagination. The power of feeling oneself “doing”, this kinesthetic source, which anchors experience in the body, adds depth of feeling to verbal and cognitive therapy. (Psychodrama with Trauma Survivors, P.F.Kellermann and M.K. Hudgins, page 42) The therapy group is a safe environment to work through the trauma in a re-empowering way. Everyone is involved in playing important roles for each other and supporting the healing process (no acting ability necessary). Sharing feelings and feedback are important phases to connect with each other through pain and healing.

Many individuals, couples and families choose to work in an expressive arts modality. Tamar Berg is skilled in psychodrama, sand play, art and movement therapies and draws from all these areas in her work with clients. The introduction of expressive modalities increases spontaneity and playfulness, thus allowing for new roles - new ways of understanding, experiencing and acting - to emerge. In the family system action therapy increases freedom and spontaneity and enhances opportunities for the emergence of new symbols and relations. For instance: The family/couple can re-create the past and bring it vividly into the here-and-now, allowing the re-editing of family myths, which are dysfunctional for family members or the family/ couple may act out rituals concerning rites of passage to overcome the restraints of change and move forward.

General Information:

Seeking therapy you will make an important personal commitment to improving or enhancing the quality of your life. Healing however may involve the need to deal with unpleasant feelings and memories. Psychotherapy should be flexible enough to meet the clients where they are in any given moment. Different people need different things at different times. Therapy is a cooperative experience, which may have different goals depending on your needs and expectations and those of the therapist. One of my goals as a therapist is clear communication. In an effort for me to be clear with you, I have outlined basic information regarding some aspects of the therapeutic process. Please take a few minutes to read and understand the following information:

Confidentiality: All information between the therapist and the client is confidential, with the following exceptions:

1. The client authorizes the release of information with a signature.
2. The therapist is ordered by court subpoena to release information.
3. If a client makes a serious threat to cause physical harm to an identifiable person, the therapist is required by law to report this to law enforcement and the intended victim.
4. If abuse of a child, an elder or a dependent adult is disclosed the therapist is required to report to the appropriate authorities.
5. If clients are a significant danger to themselves, the therapist may be ethically required to break confidentiality in order to ensure client’s safety.
